Day 26 - Break Open The Sky
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Psalm 19:1
I woke up to a bright sun at 5:30. And a beautiful lake. Matt was up and just said good morning then went back to bed. Packed up my stuff and eventually made it out. Everything was pretty sore and tired so I just took it all easy. Had some brutal climbs for the rest of the Cassier highway but honestly it wakes me up so no complaining. Matt passed me about 40 in. Good to see him again and he was impressed that I was making good time. I made it to Yukon! And then got to a lodge where I got food/wifi to call mom and dad. I was feeling really tired here. I stayed for over an hour talking to them and getting lots of food. I wouldn’t hit anything for 150+ miles. I really wasn’t sure how much I needed. I finally got going and just took it easy. I always just tell myself it’s a long day out and kept repeating that to myself so that I wouldn’t get overwhelmed. It got a bit toasty and I hit some construction. I saw a bear and then got to the flagged. She said I need to put my bike in the truck. I said no. She told me I have to talk with the pilot car. Once she arrived I told her I’m not going in a car. I’m biking from Lake Michigan to the Arctic Ocean. I’m not getting in the car. Eventually we negotiated so I could walk in the ditch off the road through 2 creeks past some bears. As I walked for about an hour it was around 4 miles or 6k the construction people were very friendly. One even asked if I wanted a cold Gatorade. yeah! Thanks Matthew!! Got warned about some bears. Finally made it out. Felt pretty hardcore for that one. It was actually super tough. But good time to mentally check out and spend some time praying. I went for another hour and the clouds became very ominous. Lots of rain in the near distance that I was riding towards. Winds started to change quickly. I wondered if I should stop. I was just 105 in. I went into the trees. It was 5:30. It’s really hard to know whether or not you’re making a good decision. I looked at the maps and saw it was just 210 to get me to Whitehorse. I figured I could sleep and wait out the rain and get going in the morning. So that’s what I did. Fell asleep at 6 and dozed on and off until my alarm woke me up at 12:15 am!
