Tom FlournoyThat is a very detailed sculpture! I especially like the scales. It looks like a carp perhaps. -Mark

Karen PoretTo Tom FlournoyUnfortunately there’s no fact about this fish, other than the knowledge it’s 1) a nod to the town’s history with fish and 2) the sculpture is modeled after “one fish, two fish”, as in the chain of what eats what, so to speak…

Karen PoretTo Karen PoretMark.. here’s more..
The Stavoren sculpture is based upon a Dutch painting and not an actual fish type..

Karen PoretTo Bill ShaneyfeltFINALLY an answer about the “what is this”… It is a “herring cart”.. The seller stood in a semi-circle, having a knife in one of the metal legs.. ( the sheath is visible) The side he would be working from could slide forward and backward-depending on the amount of fish on the cart!

Tom FlournoyDo you know why they wear wooden clogs? And why (presumably) only in the Netherlands? -Mark

Karen PoretTo Tom FlournoyYes..the farmers wear them, mostly because of the mud. ( it’s a rural thing) and part of their Dutch heritage.
