Alps to Adriatic day 5 - Tolmin to Goriška Brda

Tuscany of Slovenia

Today we definitely noticed the change in climate zone with all different plants. We see palm trees again and we’re back among vineyards. It definitely feels like we’re in the Mediterranean zone.

We passed the confluence of the Sočan and Tolminka rivers and saw lots of swimming beaches.  We saw an old railway bypass from 1906 (tree overgrowth made pics hard) and Karnal bridge.

We’re also very close to the Italian border here and you could see the Italian influence in many things.

Part of our route was included in the Giro 2025 and signs were around for local boy favorite. As a side note, the local cyclists we see here are amazing! These are definitely some of the fastest I’ve seen in many many countries. I would have to believe that Tadej influence is strong.
The area we were in had two huge Italian armies deployed in The Great War (WWI) which this resulted in most of these roads being built as well as railways, water reservoirs and hospitals. The area on the the right side of the Soča River is called Goriška Brda and is now famous for its white wines which include Ribolla Gialla, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio etc. This area is part of the 500 km Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic trail that commemorates WWI and includes over 300 monuments.

“We strive to slow down the pace of time and invite visitors to relaxation or reflection. Places, once marked by the horrors of war, stand today as memorials and reminders, and with the Walk of Peace, they are spreading the message of peace, collaboration and friendship among nations.“. So lovely.
