To Roncade, Italy

Am I terrible if I am much more impressed with Roncade than Venice? I have to laugh at myself. Who would say such a thing?

We left Lido by ferry for four miles. We rode a big circle on land, only to end up barely north of Venice, on 22 miles away. Our elevation most of the day was zero or below. We ended up 26 feet above sea level. The Alps are a long way up from here.

It had rained heavily all night, but cleared by morning. There was a stiff wind, and it was chilly. Jacinto dallied over his coffee, not wanting to go out in the chilly wind. Just imagine if we had been here last week, we would have roasted! Our bikes were outside in all of that weather, but didn't seem the worse for the wear. My phone said 79 degrees at the finish of the day. It was perfect riding weather.

The day was mostly pleasant country riding. My favorite road was Via Salsi. We saw two pairs of touring cyclists today, and a number of day riders.

Why was this better than Venice (for me)? I think we were on sensory overload from all of the sights and people. Neither of us took many photos. We didn't talk much, but spent our time turning the pedals and decompressing.

We had agreed Roncade looks like a small place, and we should eat when we could. Jacinto passed up a pizzeria. He says he didn't see it. We decided to take our chances in Roncade proper. We lucked out! I think we ate our first real Italian meal. I declared my shrimp tagliatelle the best meal of the trip.

Then we went to our lodging. We have a garden suite in the castle tower! How cool is that? This is the castle-set castle we've stayed in. The only problem is that I haven't seen a suit of armor. That's my method of measurement for a castle. But, I do love our spacious tower.

I may not leave. We are eating dinner at the same restaurant. They have several pages of pizza, and also sell pizza by the meter!

I figured out the touch screen and took a number. P018

We stopped by the post office to mail post cards. I waited 25 minutes. My number never came up on the screen, forget actually getting to the window. The ferry was waiting.

We passed a water park that was being overtaken by vines. It looks like it belongs in a horror movie.

My favorite part of the day was riding on Via Salsi, which ran along this canal.

This is the patron Saint of Venice, Saint Mark. He is traditionally shown with wings, a book, and a halo.

This statue looks like it belongs down on the Camargue.

I think we are in villa territory. The country homes were all similar to this.

We didn’t take many church photos today.

This looks like a traditional kitchen.

Jacinto’s meat plate. It’s very nice to get what we ordered. No surprise plate of lunch meat slathered in mayo.

Leaving La Roca.

The neighboring church. Roncade is a tidy little town. I’m much more of a small town person than a big city person.

I didn’t ask the estimated age of this HUGE tree that is a branch on the ground by the statue.

The outside of our tower. I am much happier here than Rapunzel. Our bikes are tucked behind the trees at the front door.

We have the top floor of a tower. This is the living room.

The ceiling of the living room. You can see the top of the tower out the window. The villa rooms have period piece furniture while the tower had more modern furniture.
