Homeward bound

Woodstock to  Bungendore

The roast lamb last night was so good  I spent most of the night dreaming about it. Whilst the other three guys pitched their tents I was offered the presidential suite in the shearing quarters which would have been rude to turn down so I took it. Being the autocratic president of this unruly mob has its benefits. Michael and Sarah were wonderful hosts and made our last night a memorable occasion.

Sarah, Michael and the unruly mob.

Our ride today was briefly in NSW and then into the ACT via Uriarra Crossing and on to Lake Burley Griffin. We negotiated a big hill immediately after crossing the Murrumbidgee and a little later the famed 18 (or is it 19) mile hill, so named because of its proximity to Queanbeyan.

Ah suburbia. How I’ve missed you.

By the time we hit the new developments of Denman Prospect we were ready for second breakfast. From there it was all bike paths through to the lake. We were in familiar territory, having ridden these paths many times but it didn’t stop me from playing tourist and snapping away happily.

Royal Canberra golf club. I was a member for many years until resigning when they made wearing checked trousers compulsory.

Not having to stop by the roadside for lunch was a novelty. Walt and Burley at the Kingston Foreshore satisfied our cravings before we headed past the national institutions on the lakes edge, through Mulligans Flat and on past the airport. It seems so much longer than 21/2 weeks since Cherie dropped me there.

Much better than Indian style gnocchi.

From there it was on to Queanbeyan and the last big climb up the Zero Mile hill. At the top we veered off the Kings Highway towards Captains Flat before heading for  Bungendore via our standard Saturday morning loop.

Riding up the Queanbeyan hill on the old Bungendore road. I just can’t imagine passing a hurtling semitrailer on this goat track.

The headwinds we’d battled all day took pity on us and seemed to swing around and on taking the left turn onto the Hoskinstown road we were blown all the way home. Boys being boys we mustered a final sprint to the Trucking Yard road sign which I misjudged as I got my roads mixed up. Beers were on me and Splitwise.

So that’s another trip done and dusted. It’s the first time I had done a long trip and finished in my hometown which actually felt  a little weird. Usually you have a day or two to decompress and get back into the normal swing of life. Not this time though. The swear jar may well get a solid workout.

As usual my travel companions kept me mostly on track but still fell for my confident tone and insistence on me knowing a short cut that inevitably never existed. They were all without exception great company and made for lots of interesting fireside chats (when I could get them off their devices), so thank you Steve, Di, John, Ross and of course Pete who did the entire trip with me.
