Introduction: How we met and then cycled Africa & Europe

This is an old journal that we are uploading here to archive memories. Pictures are digitalized from slide film, and many are out of order. We also didn't take good notes of the honeymoon ride.

The backstory.

We met outside Nelson NZ May 1993

We reached the pass, Rachel stops to make a pot of tea.

We take the ferry to Wellington on the North Island

Two days in Wellington, we part ways. Patrick mentions he is looking to cycle in Africa, Rachel says she'll think about it while she cycles in Australia. Patrick continues to USA and meets up with his family in Missoula, staying with friends of Rachel.

Linda Lake met up with Patrick to cycle to her home in Sacramento

Frans and Linda cycle with Patrick and Linda Lake through Yellowstone. Jenny and Linda's husband drive and meet up with everyone at the end of the day.

January 1994, Rachel meets up with Patrick in Capetown.

Belgium cyclists have been cycling around the world for 5 years. And meeting up with Geoff Cox, a Brit who had been on an Overland Truck Tour and in Nairobi decided he would rather be cycling. He bought a local African bike and found some gear.

Frans and Linda join us again cycling through France

Patrick is met at the Belgium/Holland border by villagers and friends and welcomes him home after 2 and half years cycling around the world.

The town sent a marching band to welcome Patrick home.

It is October 1994, Rachel returns to the USA, we keep in touch. Rachel is staying with her mother who has health issues. Patrick calls every Sunday. He comes to USA May 1995 and we decide to marry.

We married on a bridge over Rattlesnake Creek in Missoula MT July 8, 1995. We did a 5 week honeymoon ride and didn't write a journal so the tour is in pictures.
