Mailing a bike case in France?

Jacquie Gaudet

I'm getting ready to book the flights for my upcoming retirement celebration bike tour this spring and need to decide whether flying into Bordeaux and home from Paris is a viable option.

In 2016 I mailed my case from Barcelona to my hotel near Bilbao (following Scott Anderson's lead) and now I'm wondering if it would be as seamless in France.  I could do it myself or get the hotel to do it--especially if I stay at hotels from the same chain at both ends.  I find it's easiest to book a hotel near my arrival airport for the first night (because I'm usually exhausted and jet-lagged and my luggage might be delayed) and near my departure airport for the last night (hopefully to eliminate any last-minute panic).

Thoughts from those who might know?

I would start with the UPS Mail Boxes outlet in Bordeaux.  Here’s the outlet, and they accept questions through their website: https://www.mbefrance.fr/en/shipment/bordeaux/2537

I don’t know, but based on our experience in Bilbao las fall I’m confident it would work fine.  We were very surprised at how easy and inexpensive it was.  We just wheeled our suitcases in the door and they took them away.  For 44 euros each they wrapped them and shipped them to our final hotel in Sete - it was even international.  We would always do this now, as long as there’s a UPS outlet nearby.

As a Canadian, UPS would never be my first thought to ship anything.  They are famous for charging big "brokerage" fees when you order something from a US vendor to be delivered to Canada from the USA--even when you've paid the already high fees for shipping to Canada, UPS will present you with an additional invoice to be paid in order to collect your package.

I assume they didn't do that to you thanks to both France and Spain being members of the EU.

There was no fee breakout that I recall, but I didn’t give much thought to it.  It just seemed like a reasonable cost.  In the future when I need to do this, I’ll look for a hotel close to a UPS outlet.  It was just lucky that there was one only two blocks from our hotel in Bilbao.  Worked great.
