Yes, being built. The blocks are like the wooden framing we have at home. Inside will be finished with drywall/plaster and the outside is usually plaster/stucco. They will have windows and doors before people move in, of course.

2 weeks agoWell thank goodness for the lack of earthquakes here. The stone walls and houses are so right in this environment. It would such a shame to have them periodically being tumbled down.
2 weeks agoOf course, on Vancouver Island you could build with masonry, but you'd need to reinforce that masonry to give it some resistance to earthquakes. I don't think seismic events are very frequent in Provence.
2 weeks agoYou could really spend a lot of time in Provence in the right season. l'Isle sur Sorgue looks like it would be a good base for awhile, but we really enjoyed our four day stay in Pernez just a few miles further on. The region is dotted with smaller places no one goes to that are worth stopping at or biking to from a base - Barbentane, for example. Or it that's too long of a stretch for a day ride from Saint Remy (where I biked to it from last fall), you could leave most of your weight at your base and make an overnight loop there and back.
2 weeks agoWe are seriously considering an Anderson type tour on Mallorca and through Provence, where we settle into nice villages and take unloaded day rides to explore the countryside. It definitely has a certain appeal.

Probably a bicycle rental or repair shop. In medieval Europe, when most of the population were not literate, businesses used symbols of their trade to indicate what was available at their shop. So, a loaf of bread for a bakery, candles for a chandler, a horseshoe for a blacksmith, and so on.
