Mark, thanks for reaching out. In another case of bicycling serendipity, I have been reading and enjoying your Midlife Crisis journal, I'm still in south Florida. I did that Key West ride a few years ago and called every accommodation, "twice as expensive as it should be." You may have missed a waterfront path from South Beach to Haulover Bridge but you did ride by my mom's apartment and thanks for pointing out the monastery that is a short ride but I've never visited. I love your deep dive tourist style travel mode. It is something I could emulate. Sorry we didn't meet, I am sure we would have had a few laughs or cried because of the mosquitoes and rain. If you find yourself on the Empire State Trail south of Albany, reach out.
5 days agoI feel your pain, and wish I'd known you were riding it at the same time as me so we could've met. Even with much shorter days than you, the trip got successively more difficult, and my ride from Hancock to Paw Paw was probably the hardest day of my (so far) 1,800 miles.
And I like your description of the mosquitoes: "present in biblical numbers and had no problem attacking any exposed skin." They were vicious, worse than I've seen in 30 years, and made stopping unpleasant.
The trail will still be there when the weather is good. I think it was a good call on your part.
