So that’s her secret to greatness. And here I thought it was the 42 miles.
2 years agoAnd here's me thinking it's a robin.
2 years agoIt’s really faster with cassettes on both wheels. With 54 gears, it’s no wonder I can’t keep up with her.
2 years agoHer front wheel has a cassette? That’s a bit of an unusual front wheel….
2 years agoWow!
2 years agoI stand corrected. Mountain bluebird it must be.
2 years agoThat’s right, they do mike it up into the southern interior. Are you familiar with mountain bluebirds though? Both species are on the Manning Park checklist, but a mountain bluebird is probably more common - and definitely more eye-catching.
2 years agoThe one I saw, and I remember it because it was bright blue and wasn’t a Steller’s Jay, was in Manning Park. My brother, who lives in the Slocan Valley (near Nelson, BC) says he sees them occasionally.
I’m pretty sure they aren’t seen here on the coast.
Very Tibetan
2 years agoYou might have, but maybe not where you live. Southern BC is at the northern edge of their range.
2 years agoI thought I'd only seen a western bluebird once but maybe it's possible I've seen others when they weren't blue. Very pretty even in this colouration.
2 years agoNo, we haven't been there yet. We'll have to put in our list of things to see while in Tucson when we're there in May. BTW, I'm reading Birders Without Borders. It's inspiring as is your quest. I see so few varieties of birds here except at a nearby riparian preserve that I visit every so often. And not one roadrunner to be seen anywhere!
2 years agoI don't suppose you have a portable bird feeder you carry in the Raven to encourage birds to visit you?
I've been thinking about hummingbird feeders. Phil says he's had hummingbirds since October at his feeders in Oro Valley.
It is 26 degrees right now. I took a walk around the block (literally) and it felt nice. I'm sure the windchill factor when on a bike wouldn't be so nice!
Have you seen this before? It’s very easy to get to, right on the short nature trail right behind the visitor center.

It looks quite a bit like one of your robins alright, which we have not got. Our robins are quite different - larger, and a type of thrush.
