It is for me as well. Every one we pass warms my heart, and seems somehow different than the one before, it’s wonderful seeing them in a different season for the first time.
6 years agoA rural road lined with plane trees is, to me, a symbol of France. I never tire of them.
6 years agoThey do remind you of the arbutus (we called them madronas down in the States), don’t they. Their patchiness is so suggestive, like cloud patterns or ink blots. If you look hard enough, you can see clouds or people in them.
6 years agoWe also love the bark of the plane trees. Very similar to our Arbutus trees here.
6 years agoNever enough Plane trees, unless they are on the despicable Canal du Midi (not their fault the track is so bad, though.)
6 years agoOops, no we haven’t done it...it is firmly in next year’s itinerary 👍. The video, with music had me back riding the spectacular route from Verona to Brenner Pass, probably my three favourite riding days the whole tour. Because we were on a dedicated bike route we could plug in the tunes and just joyfully ride, which is how I felt watching Rachael’s video...the spectacular scenery, the exercise, the sheer joy of it...I think I will go jump on my bike right now 😀.
6 years agoWe wondered if you two had been here. This country is so amazing, isn’t it? An endless treasure chest of unbelievable surprises. If you haven’t been there already, you should also ride the Route des Crêtes if you’re in the area. If we’re down this way again and the weather allows, I’m sure we will ourselves. We’d probably stay in Le Ciotat thong instead of Cassis Nd bike up and back from the ‘easy’ side.
Keep warm and dry,
Scott
I am so envious. The map of Europe is already gracing the dining room table. The video today took me right back. We must do that route. On a funny note, we had the best Italian food of any of our tours in both Austria (Innsbruck) and Germany (Garmisch).

Agreed. I’m thinking, btw, of starting up a forum thread on setting photo quotas. Food, cows, cats, and their ilk. Thoughts?
6 years agoYup. I like the black lace skirt too. Nobody does it like the French!
6 years agoThat is a very stylish rain cape!
6 years agoNo shame in pushing, it’s an upper body workout at a pace where you can look for money in the ditch, think deep thoughts, and spew the occasional profanity.
6 years agoIf I'd been there I would have cried with her!!
6 years agoJust another character builder. She’s built up quite a bit or character by now, I think most would agree.

So glad you got to Pont du Gard on your travels through southern France. We've cycled to the Pont on two separate tours, both times in November, and feel very lucky to have enjoyed the amazing sight when hardly anyone else was there. The second time we toured the museum, and agree with you that it is definitely worth visiting. Thanks for keeping up your detailed journal with the great photos. We look forward to reading it every day, and you've given us lots of ideas for future tours.
