Optimistic math?
4 weeks agoI thought India was hot in March! 40+ is Turkana temps where we were trying to cool down in the shade of the bus! Can't imagine cycling in those temps. Hopefully the heatwave eases for you soon x

1 month agoBijou, I am enjoying following your journey, as we did the same stretch last year around the same time as you. We also stayed in Hotel Ayna in Beyneu. It was the day of the WW2 memorial and Saving Private Ryan was being aired on Kazhak TV.
If you aren't already using them, we found the apps iOverlander and anything using OpenStreetMaps (i.e. Organic Maps) more reliable then Google, especially for road closures. If you aren't already in it, there is also a WhatsApp group for people cycling around west/central and east Asia called Cycling East, which can give up to date info on road closures etc -- you can join here: https://allmylinks.com/link/out?id=1t2nrw2-2oxm0-zrsg5m
You might be suprised, but there actually are cake shops in Beyney and Aqtau, a few hundred KMs from where this pic was taken

We left Aqtau almost a year ago to the day and also stayed in Zhetybay -- we were also invited to stay in the mosque, and slept in the exact spot you did too!
Enjoy the journey to Beyneu and beyond.
Hopefully you come across a cake shop. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
