March 18 - 24

Times are a changing … fortunately!

Spring cycling is in full swing now as the outside temperatures are pushing above the freezing mark.  What that means for me is roads that are drying out, snowpack is shrinking, and temperatures don’t require lots of layering and time to unfreeze after a ride.

Spring riding … roads are clearing, snow is still here, but the temperatures are above freezing.

It will be several more weeks before all of normal cycling routes are free of snow and ice but fortunately the sun is starting to make a difference and a few routes are open without dodging puddles that cover the entire shoulder. I have seen exactly 3 other cyclists so far but hopefully more are to ride my way.

Bike paths, however, will be a bit longer as there is not a huge “desire” by the state and borough to clear those safer lanes. But a trip down to Anchorage is on the schedule so a little farther south means a hopeful greater degree of snow melt.

Today's ride: 182 miles (293 km)
Total: 2,537 miles (4,083 km)
