Castelo de Vide - Alburquerque

We had no sun but a surplus of everything else that's good- interest, variety, stunning landscapes, good roads, all in all again an excellent day on our bikes. When we arrived at the end of the day, I was tired and the remainder of the day was dedicated to finding food, resting and taking care of the usual after-ride chores. A journal entry had to be postponed. Today, two days later, so as not to get hopelessly behind, I'll let pictures and captions suffice for a recap of the day.

Janos gets help maneuvering his bike out of the narrow door to our apartment.

Steep, but he is getting a bit of help, he doesn't have to carry his helmet.

Before we leave I spy this fanciful detail on a building on the main square.

Getting close to the Spainish border on a wonderful, small road

Narrow roads lined with stone fences

No official border sign, but we are now entering Spain. I felt reluctant to say good-bye to Portugal, I loved our time there.

Interesting roof, probably common in earlier times, but not today. This is the only one I saw.

Jacquie GaudetIt looks like you got some of the Saharan dust like the Andersons saw in Andalucia.

Suzanne GibsonTo Jacquie GaudetTo be honest I think it was sloppy editing. I might replace it.

Jacquie GaudetTo Suzanne GibsonThe marker posts beside the road look like a reasonable shade of white, but the tint to the photo gives it a surreal air. Looks interesting to me, though perhaps not what it was really like on the day.

Suzanne GibsonTo Jacquie GaudetI've now posted a version that is more consistent with the other images. I'll leave them both in.

We had a final climb to our little apartment that we shared with Susan, very basic but spacious, fine for a night and again our bikes were safe in the courtyard. Alburqerque has a small town atmosphere, bigger than a village, and it appeared to be untouched by tourism. As we had been anticipating in Spain, we didn't get a meal before 9:30, and like our sleeping arrangement, it was very basic.

A few photo impressions of Alburquerque.

Karen PoretI see a few older men in the background. Perhaps they are awaiting the Grampies “group” from their previous photos ;)

Charmaine RuppoltWhen I was in Spain years ago, I had heard about the late dinners, but never had that happen! Never had to wait until late in the evening.
