Hiking in Mt Fitz Roy

We really didn’t get any rain for the last two days but the weather was kind of overcast and cool. On Wednesday, we decided to do the two day hike up to the lagoon at Mt  Fitz Roy. If the weather is overcast, basically, you have no views, and although it would be a great hike, there wouldn’t much to see.

Rented a back pack, hiking poles, and better sleeping bag !

You can see the mountain in background.

Map of some of the trails. So many options to do 1 to multiple day hikes.

The hike is possible in 10 hours we decided to split it over two days. This means we didn’t have to leave at the crack of dawn.

After a nice cappuccino, we started our hike not to the top, just to the glacier lagoon.

Pedro left early and did the whole hike and one day and by fluke we met him halfway.

Speedy Pedro was on his way back as we were approaching camp

It was well worth the extra time to come here and see the mountain and do some hiking. People come from all over the world to climb this mountain quite spectacular. There is a huge difference to hiking and climbing. The climbers have all the ropes, hikers either a small knapsack for day hiking or tent for multi days of hiking.

When you get up to the main campsite, you see hundreds of tents set up. This is almost like wild camping. You get your water from the stream , there is no shower, and to do your business there is a basically a shack  with a hole in the ground.

The hike up took about two hours to get to the lagoon. It was quite steep in certain points with rocks small boulders to walk around, not for an out of shape person. I’ll be honest when I was hiking up and turned around and looked down,  I just shook my head and said this will be interesting.

When you get to the top to see the lagoon, it’s quite impressive. You can hike down again a bit and walk across to another lagoon. I heard it was quite good too however I was tired and little bit concerned about getting back down the first incline.

To my surprise walking down it was a lot easier than I expected. I don’t know how it would’ve been possible without walking sticks, but people were doing it no problem. We got back around 730, had a quick bite and was in the tent by 830.
The campsite was in the trees, and without sun it was getting pretty cool.

Another night if you get noisy neighbours would make for a restless sleep

I’m so happy we rented the warmer sleeping bags. It was one of those nights where my nose got chilly.

I thought walking down would be hard, actually quite easy.

You know you are wild camping when you see this. Literally a hole in the ground or the woods
