Roma

Monday the 6th of May 2024

No journal entry for yesterday because it was pretty crap.  Leigh didn't sleep particularly well and was bilious through the whole ride.  A fresh headwind didn't help her feel any better.  Upon our arrival in Roma she had a shower, an early supper and headed to bed.

She woke up feeling like a human being again this morning so we had the whole day to take in Roma's biggest bottle tree and get ready for the next week off the beaten track.  This meant an hour or so in the local IGA (which was thankfully open today being Labour Day), do our laundry and rest up properly.

Tree hugging. The narrow-leaved bottle tree (Brachychiton rupestris) is endemic to Queensland but most of those in Roma (as in Surat further south) have been planted.

Lots of chatting to the Grey Nomads during our stay here.  Also long conversations with an articulate fellow who has fallen on hard times and witnessing the joy brought to him by campground owners' kindness.  The world is full of good people.  Serendipitously,I today came upon the following quote from Herman Melville's essay "Poor Man's Pudding and Rich Man's Crumbs" written in 1854:

"Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed."

Heading northwards towards Injune  tomorrow but will wildcamp somewhere around halfway.

Today's ride: 88 km (55 miles)
Total: 2,556 km (1,587 miles)
