Now in my sixties, I took up cycle touring when osteoarthritis took hold in my knees and curtailed my high-altitude trekking adventures. I had all the lightweight hiking and camping gear, but couldn't carry it on my back any more. So what to do? Someone suggested I get a mule, but on a trip to New Zealand I encountered some cycle tourists, and they were the source of my inspiration. I've been a cyclist nearly all my life, so loading my gear on a bike and heading out on a road trip seemed like an entirely natural thing to do.
