To Zeitlofs

Leaving the Main

Today started much like yesterday with a full breakfast provided by the host at our hotel. Our stay at Hotel Mainblick Garni in Marktheindenfeld was great! But, we needed to move on again and our ride today was broken down into two different sections. The first part continued on the cycle route that we have been following the last few days and we headed to the town  of Gemünden am Main. Here we crossed over the Main River for the last time and continued north primarily along the Sinn river to the small town of Zeitlofts.

We stayed right on the Main River in Marktheidenfeld and the views are always interesting. Here is a barge turning the corner and heading down river.

One of the bridges to Marktheidenfeld is the Alte Mainbrücke ("Old Main Bridge"), made out of red sandstone blocks. It was built in the mid-19th century.

Morning street view in Marktheindenfeld.

On our way out of town. The new surface strip is so much smoother for walkers, wheelchairs and small wheeled bikes than the standard cobble stones!

Views across the river.

Views along the river always include many wide open fields.

Approaching the town of Neustadt on the other side. You can tell we are headed into a strong headwind by the puffiness of Pat's jacket!

Many trailers located along the river to be appear semi-permanent and are likely people`s vacation spots.

Lots of cycle tourers.

There are many spots to admire the views.

The views from the saddle are not bad either.

Sending the youngsters in for a swim.

Strawberries! Picking them on wheeled trollies looks so civilized compared to the way we did it as teens trying to make a buck.

Leaving the  Mainradweg near Gemünden was a bit tricky for us as we had become very accustomed to following bike route signage and we needed to piece together a stretch of unmarked territory. After a few back and forths we did link up with our new cycle route - the number 9.

The well marked Mainradweg. We will miss you!

Crossing the Main River one last time.

A high speed rail line bridge right beside our bridge. We saw similar elevated structures along the way to Zeitlofs and marvelled at how the German`s took all the undulations out of the geography.

Pat has a nose for a bike path. ¨This way¨, she calls up to me.

Once back on course we stopped for a snack. The supporting infrastructure for the bike paths is very nice.

Rieneck was just beyond our route so we did not fit in a quick visit.

Fields of yellow buttercups.

The Sinn River.

Hurrah!! Great signage again but now we are following the number 9.

A shaky shot shows that the new path is not all smooth asphalt. We were wondering if we had it right at this point.

Hard to see here but up on the hill is the high speed rail line with a train on the tracks.

More gravel but only eight kilometres to go. Fortunately the gravel was short lived.

This more like it! In fact, the last few kilometres to Zeitlofs was on a reclaimed railbed that had just been paved three years ago.

The one main street in Zeitlofs.

Zeitlofs is a very small town, one church, one bakery and one  pension which is also a restaurant. We chose to stay here because its location fit our daily preferred riding distance and there were really very few, if any, choices nearby. We rolled into Fraenkischer Hof just a bit after 4PM and the door was locked. Pat began checking our booking information and Scott rang the doorbell. A large German man answered the door and we explained that we had booked a room here for the night. Without cracking a smile he said, ¨you are too late¨. I checked my watch and it was 4:07 but our reservation had noted that we would be arriving by bicycle between 3 and 4. He then broke into a huge laugh and welcomed us in. Soon he was pouring us  beers on the deck and later prepared us a fabulous Thai meal. It was a most memorable and enjoyable place to stay.
