To Wesenberg

lost key found

We started the day with a really nice breakfast at the Hotel Harmonie. Scott decided to wear his ¨non cycling¨ pants to the breakfast room this morning. These pants are a hiking designed pant with zipper security pockets located on each thigh as well as two hip pockets above. He discovered that the missing bike key had mysteriously ended up deep down in one of the thigh pockets. It was not a logical spot because he was wearing his shorts after our ride yesterday and as a result it was not located during our search. So there you have it - bike key found. Lesson learned  -  pack a spare key for your lock.

Hotel Harmonie located close to lake Müritz was a good place to stay in Waren.

It was a busy weekend in Waren. The knick knack and clothing kiosks that lined the waterfront strip yesterday were now gone and it was time to plant the flower gardens for summer. What you see is only one half of the gardens as there is a matching area on the opposite side.

Leaving Waren and looking across the marina back at the town. The cycle path was busy this morning.

Most of our ride today continued south along the Berlin - Kopenhagen route to Wesenberg. It was a really nice section to ride with  many interesting sights. We  rode mostly on quiet, designated cycling roads through farming areas, around the edges of the Muritz National Park and through many small villages.

Just beyond Waren we began cycling through forested areas with lots of cyclists out enjoying the day. They soon thinned out as we got further from town.

We passed by this historic thatched roof building but unfortunately cannot locate any information about it.

Out in the countryside on a quiet road.

The road narrowed to a path but cars surprised us from time to time.

The "Old Salt Road" is an old trade route between Lüneburg and Lübeck. It was part of what was once Germany's most important north-south connection.

The absence of comprehensive Google Street View coverage in Germany has been a notable anomaly on the global digital map for years. This was primarily due to intense privacy concerns and legal hurdles. But in July 2023, Google reintroduced Street View to Germany with some strict conditions.

This beautifully built rock road went on for kilometres and we were very happy to have the brick or asphalt path beside it.

Many cows out in this field.

We could not figure out what this raucous group of cows was up to as they were pushing and shoving and jostling each other.

On closer look, we could see them use their heads to push a steel plate and then we think they could drink some water.

A nice simple church along the way.

Our destination today was the  historic town of Wesenberg. It is a small town located right on the Wobilitzsee. Accommodation in the town was hard to find so we found a place just beyond in a nicely developed canoe and camping area. No tenting for us - we had a very comfortable room in the house. But as Wesenberg is dominated by countless lakes, which are connected to each other by small canals we think we stayed in a perfect place to enjoy the best this area has to offer. We walked to town with our hopes of having dinner at a fish house. Unfortunately they were closing when we arrived and we had to settle for local casual fare. At least it was good opportunity to see the town.

Arriving into Wesenberg.

Scott AndersonThis tour has really given me some ideas. We've never biked this far north in Germany but it really looks enticing.
