To Rinteln

Headwinds can be tough

We have been paying closer attention to weather forecasting websites for the past few days. We noted that some showers were predicted in the areas that we will be riding in going forward. Of course, the hour by hour information can vary depending on the forecaster, but there was a trend amongst them that indicated we may encounter some wet conditions this morning and afternoon. Higher winds of 20 kph were also forecasted. As we were getting ready to leave Bodenwerder it was only cloudy and cool. After breakfast we layered up and headed back across the bridge that connects the two halves of Bodenwerder to rejoin the Weser Radweg.

Our hotel, right on the river, is the building on the left.

Old school energy. We guess that it has always been windy here.

We found it interesting that small rock berms were built along both sides of the river and wondered if this was to create calm areas for fish hatching purposes.

The ride length today was just over 50KM and was split almost in half with a stop to visit the town of Hameln. Crossing the Weser, we entered  the large attractive pedestrian area where we were cautioned to walk our bikes as riding  through this area is forbidden. Hameln may also be best known for the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. PP must have done a good job as we did not see any live rats but there are some bronze ones. We enjoyed a coffee at a small café before heading on our way back toward the river.

Although we caught some sunny rays as we sipped our coffees, as we began to head off in a northwesterly direction we could see the weather changing in front of us and felt the strong wind blowing directly on our nose. We were slightly less than 30 KM to Rinteln but it was a struggle battling the wind. We stopped to share a sandwich to power us up and took the opportunity to put the pannier covers on the bags as well as our rain jackets on ourselves. Looking at the sky we were pretty sure that the forecasted showers would arrive. And they did! But we only needed  to hide out once to avoid a heavy shower. We arrived in Rinteln under sunny skies, feeling overdressed! It was warm enough to enjoy a beer outside on the market square.

Clouds are building and skies are grey heading toward Rinteln.
