To Beverungen

Back on the road again

Today we continued heading north starting on a cycle route known as the Weser Radweg. The route runs about 520 KM following the Weser River from Hann. Münden all the way to the North Sea. We are not planning to complete the entire distance but instead stop a bit short, in the City of Bremen. This cycle route was voted  Germany's most popular long-distance cycle route for the fifth time in the German Cycling Association cycle travel analysis in 2024! So our thought is that it must be good. We sure hope so as we will working away at it for the next week!

After breakfast and a quick stop to pick up  a couple of sandwiches for the road, we were rolling shortly after 10 AM. We left Hann by crossing the bridge over the Werre River and then we followed a separated bike path than ran beside the highway for our first 10KM. Efficient but the not the most enchanting cycling and we were happy when we were directed to a path along the river.

Riding the first stage of the Weser Radweg was not complicated. As we expected, there were numerous signs to follow at most corners. The surfaces varied from narrow gravel tracks to wide asphalt roadways and even a couple of small cable ferries were used to cross the river. On a nice warm spring day it felt like a leisurely Sunday ride with the occasional hill tossed in and we saw quite a few other cyclists out enjoying it, too.

The Bike Fridays were provided space on the entrance way level of the house.

Our apartment was on the top floor of the building on the left. We needed to navigate the narrow twisting staircases very carefully!

Our new sign to follow!

We passed through the village of Hameln as the small ferry was leaving. It was interesting to see how the elevated cable and pulley wheels provide the steering across in the river. We did not take this ferry.

The Hemeldog was a village project built with a wide variety of scrap parts. This small tractor was set up at the entrance to the village of Hemeln.

This was an uphill stretch taking us away from the river. Small hill by cycling standards but we did need to use our lowest gears. They have not been getting much use this trip, but seemed to work fine!

Our route then turned into a smooth gravel path through the bush. We needed to be careful on some downhill parts.

But mostly it was just riding paved paths with great views of the river and surrounding hills.

Nice green hillsides and a failed bird shot.

Coffee stop. It was a good restaurant right on the cycle path by the river. A no brainer really.

You really do need to look out for tractors! This guy trims the grass on each side of the cycle path. A nice touch.

Yellow irises. They were growing wild along the river today.

Our first ferry went out of Wahmbeck. It was loading another cycle group when we arrived and we just rode right on board. The ferries seem to go as soon as people arrive and are loaded. The whole trip took about five minutes.

Today (as all our days!) was all about enjoying the journey and not thinking too much about the destination other than it was the right distance to ride. Beverungen had a very nice park on the river with a beer garden but the town seemed a bit lacking with a very busy road running right through the middle of it.

Our hotel was great and the staff suggested that we should have dinner at their restaurant. After reviewing the other nearby options, which were few, we agreed that it would be a good choice. After all, Tripadvisor rated it No. 1 of 26 restaurants in Beverungen.  How could we go wrong? Pat`s fish and Scott`s duck dishes were both very good. We took a quick stroll around the neighbourhood after dinner and called it a night.

Leaving our second ferry that we had shared with four other cycle tourers who also had trailers for their two dogs. There was a bridge crossing just down river but the ferries are way more fun!

Our ferry partners arriving at Beverungen. They stopped at the bar where we were having a beer, too!
