Dijon Rest Day

Today was our first "official" rest day, although we sort of snuck a partial one in yesterday. But who's counting? We slept in a bit and then hit the market.

The market in Dijon. I actually think the one in Sens is a bit better, although definitely smaller.

Jerry had hoped to find breakfast here, but no such luck. I did not have high hopes either . . . so we ended up at a (ahem) "cafe" called Paul's. Well, it is an upscale place of sorts but also an international chain. Still, it passed muster and fed us.

Then off to the cathedral, which was back across town. But we were first distracted by the Porte Guillaume and the Archaeological Museum of Dijon, where we had a nice visit before touring the cathedral.

On the way, we paid homage to Thomas Jefferson at the Porte Guillaume, which bears a plaque dedicated to him.

The first floor of the Archaeological Museum is actually below grade.

And the second floor is in this wonderfully vaulted space.

After the tour of the cathedral, we had lunch.

Salade Campagnarde.

And afterward, back to touring. Off to the Museum of Fine Arts Dijon, housed in the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy.

The tombs of the dukes, although no bodies remain. These were relocated here after the revolution when they were desecrated.

That was about it for the day. One important development, however. Over breakfast, we started thinking about lodging for the weekend. Well, it seems that there is a choral conference occurring in the area where we were planning to stay tomorrow. Seriously. We tried at least three places, and all were full. And to make it worse, all the proprietors indicated hotels for miles around were full as well. Such bad luck on our part. So for the hell of it, I checked Warmshowers, and lo and behold, we struck pay dirt. A host with great reviews that is not far off our course (only four miles) and willing to cook dinner. The only ask? Bring fresh fruit and beer. Wow, my kind of host. Very much looking forward to our stay!
