Bregenz

After overcast skies and rain yesterday, today's sunshine was very welcome. We are headed for Austria today, traversing three countries! Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and finally, into Austria.

Today's ride to Bregenz.

But we spent the most time in Switzerland, exiting Vaduz in about a New York minute as we traced our path back across the Rhine, this time over the covered bridge we bypassed on the way in.

Across the covered bridge and out of Liechtenstein.

From there, it was easy sailing down the Rhine River valley with beautiful views and flat riding as the Alps slowly receded behind us. We are headed for Lake Constance, and the Rhine has little flow this time of year. Most of our riding was away from the main river and over countryside, through small villages, and along canals and other minor waterways.

Biking down the Rhine River.

On the opposite side of the river, the Prince's residence, high on the hill above Vaduz.

Crossing the flatlands west of the Rhine. We saw many cyclists along the way.

Including this family unit at a busy crossing.

And, after much instruction to the youngest ones, a successful crossing.

Goats and other animals (like sheep and cows).

And great views of the valley as we pulled away from the Alps.

As seen from the far side.

And this view, which I really like, looking downstream.

And we started seeing more horses. Are we in horse country now?

We stopped for lunch in Altstätten, a cute town with a historic center, and then returned to the canal we had been following for some time already.

Along the canal, the trails were not all paved, but negotiating this was old hat for us.

The highlight of our day was a stop at Coiffeur am Rhy in Widnau for a sorely needed haircut. Happy and I had originally planned to do this in Vaduz, but nothing was open there on Sunday, or even Monday for that matter. So we were lucky to find this "coiffure" only two blocks off our course. We arrived at 2:30, and the proprietor, Karin Rohner, spoke perfect English, having lived in Canada for several years. The only problem was she had several appointments already scheduled, so we had to wait about an hour for her to be free. But we were only 10 miles from Bregenz, so this was not an issue. I needed a haircut!!!

Along the way we stopped at Coiffeur am Rhy for a haircut!

Happy being happy . . . with Karin!

We had a delightful time for the several hours we were there. Karin is very entertaining and fun to chat with. We were on our way by 4:45 for a nice late afternoon ride into Bregenz. We crossed the Austrian border after another three miles or so and were at the hotel by 6:00. We had a little bit of wayfinding issues after we crossed the border since T-Mobile needed to adjust, and that took some time! But we eventually found our hotel.

Crossing the border into Austria. I've been told I look severe.

Maybe I look more personable here!

And they are very bike-friendly here!

And so, a pretty much friendly ride into town!
