Berlin Day 1

So I have four days to play tourist on this, my first visit to Berlin. Today, the Berlin Wall Memorial.

On Berlin's U-Bahn, the city's metro system. I am staying at the Novum Hotel Aldea Berlin Zentrum, where that part of the U-Bahn is above grade, carried on an elevated viaduct.

The memorial follows Bernauer Straße for four or five blocks (depending on how you count them). These steel poles represent the location of the Berlin Wall.

The concrete strips are the outline of the buildings demolished over time.

Bits and pieces of the original wall remain.

On these steel columns are interpretive discussions of what happened along Bernauer Straße.

More interpretation through the use of photographs and other media. It's wholly outdoors, but they've succeeded in giving the visitor a sense of what it must have felt like.

The remains of a house that once stood at Grenzhaus Bernauer Straße 10a, now memorialized. The home and front door faced Bernauer Straße until it was boarded and/or walled up.

The original bells of the destroyed Reconciliation Church hang inside this wooden scaffolding in front of the new Chapel of Reconciliation. They are rung by hand.
