Albeuve - Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost - CycleBlaze

Albeuve

So the day started out very nicely. A little overcast and cool; perfect cycling weather. The hotel served a nice buffet breakfast. We now had hard-boiled eggs and some charcuterie. We are definitely heading into a more robust breakfast culture the further east we go. And that's a good thing!

Today's ride to Albeuve.

We pushed off a bit late, 10:10 per the picture's tag. But we only had 39 miles or so to go, so no rush!

I later told Happy he looks like a hooker on Bourbon Street!

We bypassed the pre-planned route a bit and rode along the waterfront. It was market day, and we picked up some food for the road.

It was a very nice ride out of Montreux . . .

. . . and on to our first big climb of the day, somewhere further up the shoreline.

So after a trek (and trek is harsh — more like a pleasant roll) of nearly five miles, we turned inland and faced our first Swiss climb, up from Vevey to Beauregard. Yes, there seems to be a Beauregard, Switzerland!

We made our way through Vevey, looking for the way up. This actually turned out to be an underpass for the railroad!

And at first, we thought this was our way up, but no, this was too shallow. We went to the right of this and kept climbing.

So here are pictures from the climb. The road narrowed, and it was a nice climb to make, although there were some steep inclines with (short) grades over 16%!

The grade varied considerably, and I didn't really keep a close look at it (on the Garmin). These parts seemed easy compared to later, closer to the peak.

One of the switchbacks on the way up. It was getting much steeper, but I pushed through.

Almost at the peak, and the grade rose to 16% per my Garmin. With no real momentum by me to support it, the going was tough. I even had trouble keeping the front tire down. Ultimately, I had to walk the last 10-20 feet!

At the top! This is where I waited for Happy and Jerry.

But they were not far behind, with Jerry arriving first. At the top, we entered a mountain valley with mostly gentle rolling terrain and great views back toward Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains.

Looking back on Lake Geneva.

Followed closely by Happy.

So after rolling along the mountaintop for a bit, we started a long descent. And it seemed to go on forever. It was a great ride, with only a short stop in Chalet-Saint-Denis for lunch. Here are the pics.

Hills and villages.

Bike trail or road? Sometimes it was hard to tell!

And we saw lots of cyclists!

Close-ups of little villages we passed through. This is the town/village of Vaulruz.

Lots of cyclists! This is further along our route in the town of Bulle. Note the nice, separated bicycle facility.

Outside of Bulle, the environment becomes rural almost immediately. The number of photo opportunities became overwhelming, actually.

And this one I liked because of the many modes of transportation represented passing through this one pinch point!

That last picture was taken as we continued to descend into what seemed like an endless hill. But we came out on the other side into another beautiful valley. And from there, after a short climb up from a river, onto our home for the night, Auberge de l'Ange.

Auberge de l'Ange.

And a room with a view.

I have to say, we had a great meal at the auberge. We will rest well tonight!

Today's ride: 38 miles (61 km)
Total: 525 miles (845 km)
