A day cycling in Luxembourg: We have done over 2000km !

The meal last night was delicious. Ken said his salad was the tastiest meal he has ever eaten. Perfectly fresh ingredients of course with fried camembert, melon. red currents and ever other thing you have ever imagined putting into a salad. It was dressed subtly with various dressings and served with steamed potatoes. Just a pity we didn’t have the camera as it looked really spectacular

The diurnal variation in temperature really is surprising to us. In the morning it is really quite cold and we need to set out with coats on. Just before lunch these come off and in the afternoon it has been getting hot then staying like this until dark.

We had a choice today we could stay on the right side of the river and be in Germany or the left side of the river and be in Luxembourg. Our choice was Luxembourg. We flew down the hill from Perl and across the bridge to Schengen and were in Luxembourg. The ride was like riding through a well manicured park and it stayed like this most of the day. When we came to the first small town it was too early for coffee even though it looked lovely. Next was a small village with a Wine Museum so in we went and had a good poke around and a really good talk with the owner and were able to find out lots of things about grape growing in the area. It is predominately white varieties that are grown most of which we were unfamiliar with. He assured us that the red grapes we saw yesterday are only grown in very small numbers and the quality of the wine made from them is pretty terrible. I was relieved to hear that the spraying is done mainly by helicopters so I don’t have to worry about tipping tractors! He gave us some very nice wine to taste not altogether a good idea when biking.

At the little town of lgel we took a slight detour to see the ‘Igel Saule’ erected in the 3rd century and is a 23m column honouring the importance of textile making. It is amazing that the carving has been so well preserved. Then it was on to Trier. Trier is said to be the oldest town in Germany much of it going back to before Roman times. We were keen to have a good look around and we have.
