Old Mill Track to Bairnsdale - High Country Victoria - CycleBlaze

Old Mill Track to Bairnsdale

1-3 April 2023

Orbost - good Foodworks supermarket, very small IGA, several cafes and two bakeries, 1 pub with accommodation, RSL club (may have accommodation), 1 brewery open on weekends, 2 or 3 old motels, chemist, laundromat, public pool, library has internet access.

Water refill station on rail trail near Simpsons Creek road crossing.

Waygara - open land on old mill site where you can wild camp - not an official camping area

Nowa Nowa - small general store at petrol station. Some fresh fruit and veg available. Some pies and sausage rolls in a warmer. No hot food otherwise. Some frozen meals are available in freezer. Water refill station. Two caravan parks, both expensive. Pub is currently closed.  Plenty of places outside of town that you can wild camp.

Costicks Weir - about 6 kms west of Nowa Nowa  recently refurbished area with two sites, one picnic table and drop toilet. Signposted off rail trail. There is a creek and small weir, but not sure I’d treat and drink that water, especially since it is easy to fill water in Bruthen or Nowa Nowa.  Plenty of places to wild camp in the state forest.

Log Creek Crossing - camping area on Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail (side trail off of main rail trail that goes to Lakes Entrance). Has drop toilets, but not sure about water as I did not camp here.

Bruthen - small general store, takeaway/coffee shop, pub with accommodation, brewery (for sale), good bakery, post office, antiques, visitor info centre, honey shop that sells other local goods and has small cafe.  Caravan park is cheap and has clean but old amenities block, great camp kitchen and shelter area with open fire - can also charge phone in there (was invited to do so by caretaker).

Bairnsdale - all services. Lots of cafes and takeaways.  2 bike shops. ALDI, Coles and Woolies. Two laundromats. Reject Shop and Cheap as Chips dollar stores. K-hub. Train from here goes to Melbourne. Numerous motels. Showgrounds currently does not have camping. Caravan park in town is crappy - right on main highway, unpowered sites all in the sun and there is no security - people on footpath can easily walk in and bike path goes right through the park.
