Day 102 - Newark to Delaware

Today's ride started on the Newark Trail, which we accessed from our hotel parking lot.  We followed it for about 2 miles until it merged into the T. J. Evans Trail, which runs about 16 miles northwest from Newark to Johnstown.  Both trails are heavily wooded most of the way.

There were several of these short underpasses on the Newark Trail.

The Newark Trail is a Greenway trail and had many twists and turns as it followed Raccoon Creek

As we approached the T.J. Evans Trail, we encountered this "Road Closed" sign, which didn't deter Kerry. It turned out there were mowers ahead which didn't impede our progress at all. They just waved as we rode past.

The is the old Gallman Road Bridge, which was originally in Mercer County, OH. It was relocated and repurposed on the T.J. Evans Trail

Mirror surprise!

The T.J. Evans Trail follows Raccoon Creek for much of its length as well. The scenery isn't enhanced by the billboard on the adjacent highway.

We have been on US Bike Route 50 for much of the ride since Zanesville.

Once we got to the end of the trail in Johnstown, we had wonderful cycling roads. Roads like this feel as if we're riding on a perfectly paved private bike trail.

We went past many farms between Johnstown and Delaware.

Not long before we got to Delaware, we came to this, our 2nd "Road Closed" sign of the day.

It wasn't far until the pavement resumed ahead, so Kerry knew it would be an easy walk.

He just walked the bike the short distance across the dirt.

He had one little problem here - the underseat rack got caught when he lifted the bike up onto the pavement.

Soon we were back on smooth pavement again.

We passed this old barn just before we got to Delaware. I loved the scarecrow by the fence.

We never stopped for lunch today, so we arrived very hungry about 3:30.  There is a Mexican restaurant attached to the motel that offers a 10% discount to guests.  We got our money's worth!

Today's ride: 45 miles (72 km)
Total: 3,192 miles (5,137 km)
