Day 66 - Chippewa Falls, WI

Today we did an out and back ride from Chippewa Falls.  We rode north on the Old Abe Trail - a nice, level, paved rail trail that goes from Chippewa Falls north to Cornell and then into Brunet State Park.

The Old Abe is an excellent trail to ride.

And it has this cool "wavy" bridge over Lake Wissota

Lake Wissota formed by a dam on the Chippewa River at Chippewa Falls

We met another couple cycling on the trail today.  Don and Dee are fellow Floridians, from Fernandina Beach, who are traveling in their RV.  They both grew up in Wisconsin.  It was fun riding with them for few miles.  Happy travels!

We saw this pretty farm across the river near Jim Falls.

The trail goes to the small town of Cornell.  It's ice cream parlors are very popular with cyclists.  We took a turn through town before we stopped for lunch.

This looked like a very old church building, but the stone above the entry says 1938.

Great store name!

Our lunch stop - delicious food, but we were too full for ice cream.

Just for fun, here is a picture of us in the same spot five years ago, during my first real tour and one year pre-tandem.

Haven't aged a bit :-)

Rich McKayThe only difference between the "then" and "now" photos is the mode of transportation!

Past Cornell the trail continues into Brunet State Park, which is on an island in Old Abe Lake.  I think this lake is formed by a dam at Jim Falls.

This camping section appears to be tents only. We used to love tent camping, but we never do it when we're cycle touring - way too much work for us!

Instead of returning to Chippewa Falls by riding back down the trail, Kerry decided to route us back on local roads on the other side of the river.

We crossed this bridge at Cornell.

On the way north, we had seen an old bridge which was closed.  Headed south on the other side, we learned about it.

We rode the rest of the way back to our hotel on local roads.  I took just a few more pictures.

This horse was tethered to the utility vehicle as it trotted down the field. I'm not sure what that was about.

I've lightened up many of the earlier photos so that you could see them better, but this is the way the sky looked for the last several miles. It never did rain, but it did give us a little concern.
