Day 27 Carroll, IA

The weather was great today, so we got to start early and not worry about getting caught in the rain.  It was so good to see blue skies as we rode!

We started on Hwy 4 to avoid a mile of gravel road we encountered unexpectedly yesterday.  It had the bad rumble strips, but very little traffic, so we were fine.

We got back on the Raccoon River Valley Trail after four miles on Hwy 4.  The trail was in fair condition - not as good as the part we rode yesterday.  Just a few miles up the trail, we found the trail closed with a sign and barricade that looked like this was not just a recent closure.  Even Kerry accepted that the trail was really closed ahead.  Kerry and I took a gravel road for one mile back to Hwy 4  while team A rode an extra two miles to stay on paved road.  We all took Hwy 4 into Jefferson.  Fortunately, there were no more evil rumble strips.

Jefferson is a nice small town with an attractive town square.  There is a large bell tower, but it did not play while we were in town.

From Jefferson to Carroll we rode through another thirty miles of Iowa farms.  It was very pretty.

We were on the Lincoln Highway most of the way from Jefferson to Carroll

Our noses and ears told us this was probably an empty pig barn

We arrived in Carroll by early afternoon.  It was nice to get in early after the late starts and late arrivals of recent days.   We'll be ready for another great day tomorrow.

Today's ride: 62 miles (100 km)
Total: 1,260 miles (2,028 km)
