Day 49: Bath, ME

Today we went to the Maine Maritime Museum. It is on the site of the former Percy and Small Shipyard and tells the story of wooden ship building in Bath from the mid 1800's to the early 1900's.

The last 6 masted schooner built here was the Wyoming, built in 1909. This sculpture represents her bow, stern and masts. Tip to tip, she was over 450 feet long. She was the largest wooden ship ever built.

Woodworking tools still look almost the same as they did 100 years ago.

The joiners were the top level carpenters who did the interior woodwork and furnishing for the ship. They were among the highest paid employees. They also had a private bathroom :)

There were also some exhibits about the Bath Iron Works, which has been building ships for the US Navy since 1884 and there was a building dedicated to lobstering in Maine.

The coolest thing at the lobster exhibit. They were loading it on a trailer to take to some weekend event.
