Cagnes sur Mer: Mission Accomplished

We had a leisurely breakfast and then said goodbye to Claire and Jacques who have been so kind to us. Down the hill we sped and in no time we were at the coast and the route we were to follow all day.

It was of course very easy with no hills at all, most of the time we were on dedicated cycle ways but occasionally we were on the road. The only difficult spot was at Antibes where it was rather hard to find which way we were going. Just as we were back on the cycleway out of Antibes we met Sekitode from Japan who is riding around the world - he started in Los Angeles in June. If you are interested in reading what he is up to his blog is afoolonthebike.blog.fc2.com. He rode with us all the way until we turned off, his goal for the day was Menton so he had some hills in store.

Today our aim was to get to Cagnes sur Mer, this at the Rue du Chateau was the final leg of Pat and Armand's bike journey from Paris. I couldn't but think that they must have been feeling very relieved that all the hills were behind them. But wait a minute they weren't. Rue du Chateau is actually in Haut de Cagnes and the word that tells you about it is haut. For those that know Dunedin every street is steeper that View St. For us and for them also there was a real sting in the tail. But we found it, in the address that Pat put on her letter there was no actual street number but there were only a few houses in the street. The actual little village is absolutely stunning and we wandered the streets (very slowly because of the steepness) and drank beer in the square near the Chateau. Our mission is accomplished. Tonight we are staying in an absolutely glorious little place Villa Estella that looks as if it has been here for a hundreds of years and has amazing views from the terrace over the countryside. Tomorrow of course it is just a short ride into Nice itself. I have just realised why Pat and Armand must have come to Cagnes sur Mer. Armand was a painter and there was a great colony of painters here - Renoir came here to work in 1908 and it continued on

goodbye Cannes
