A ride in a train

If like us you have a day or two in Nice with no cycling to do what I really recomend is to take a ride on the Trains des Pignes. We did this first around 10 years ago at the start of a walking trip in Haut Provence with Janet and Lindsay. It is a narrow gauge raitway run by the Chemin de Fer de Provence and goes 150km through the mountains from Nice to Didnes-les-Bains. The route is spectacular following the Var into the mountains through tight gorges and with ancient villages clinging to the sides of the remote valleys. Today we went as far as Touet-sur-Var. It is a steep walk up to the Medieval Village with its extraoridinary views. At the top of the village is St Martins an ancient church built in an arc over the torrent of water that comes from the waterfall behind it. Today it was almost dry but I can imagine how spectacular it is when it is raining
