Floating Down the Rhine

On a historic paddlewheeler

Floating down the Rhine on the historic paddle wheeler Goethe.

The Goethe is the largest side paddle steamer in the world today. It was placed in service in 1913, has had an eventful history and, after being hit by a bomb in World War Two, actually spent several years lying submerged on the bed of the Rhine. Following extensive restoration in 1996, the GOETHE celebrated her 100th anniversary in 2013.

We were traversing the same part of the Rhine that we had ridden up but from the middle of the river we got a different perspective and better views of the castles and towns as they slipped by.
