Riding to Lucerne

The last leg of our Swiss biking tour

Today the sun was shining as we set off from Wilen headed toward Lucerne. This was our easiest riding day, only 21 miles and 386 feet of climbing. For the most part our route today stayed near the shores of several lakes. We were very impressed with the cycling infrastructure in Lucerne and through the towns leading to Lucerne. We often had marked bike lanes and sometimes separate structures built out over the water. We also came to a place where a mud and rock slide had completely obliterated the trail and a new trail with signage had been built.

Once we got to Lucerne our luggage had not arrived yet so we set out to explore the town. We crossed the river on the chapel bridge, walked up to the lion monument, climbed the towers on the old city wall and walked along the top of the wall. Then we headed back to our hotel hoping our luggage had arrived….

The rain is gone and we had a fabulous view out of our hotel window this morning

This was one of the first of several impressive biking infrastructures designed to keep cyclists and pedestrians safe and still let them traverse the same path as the cars. Here the bike/pedestrian path was built into a carve out of rock

Then later the cycling path was built out over the water

This structure is wood

They do a really good job of marking where the bikes go and where the pedestrians go. Any time a bike lane moves onto the sidewalk or into the road there is signage on the ground telling you where to go

Here the bikes stay to the left and pedestrians to the right

On this road there are bike lanes on both sides of the road and only one lane for two way car traffic to share.

We arrived in Lucerne and left our bikes parked for the last time in the hotel’s bike storage area. These Flyer bikes were good to us they helped us up some steep grades and served us well

Our hotel room has really cool crown molding

Exploring Lucerne where so many bike routes converge. We followed bike route 9 from Vevey to Lucerne with a few deviations…

The Lion monument, it commemorates the Swiss Guards who were killed in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
