Croatia!

Travel Day

This morning we took an early flight from Zurich to Zagreb then rented a car to drive to our air bnb near Plitvice lakes. We decided to take the non toll roads because we weren’t sure how the tolls worked, do they take change? are they electronic? If they are electronic what do we do, we don’t have a device….. so suffice that to say the first part of our trip was on teeny tiny back roads extremely windy and lots of ups and downs with lots of curves. Several times we had big trucks coming toward us with no place to go but we managed and didn’t put any new scratches on the car… One driving, one navigating and one car sick from all the ups and downs and turns.

Another complicating factor…. We missed a turn and needed to back up in order to go back but couldn’t get the car into reverse…. How silly is that?! It is a six speed manual transmission and we tried everything we could think of, buttons, levers, pushing down…. None of those tricks worked so we maneuvered carefully to make sure we were never in a situation to need reverse…

Made it to our very nice air bnb, got settled, and then decided to head out for our lunch/dinner at a local restaurant. However, first we needed to put the car in reverse…. One emergency call home to a car loving family member and we had the simple answer…….  Put the car in neutral, pull up on the leather boot around the shifter lever and jam it over into reverse! Phew! It worked, even though it was a two handed maneuver.

Had great Croatian meals learned how to say thank you and thank you very much in Croatian.

Hvala - Thank you

Hvala puno - Thank you very much

And back to the air bnb for a nap. We have a plan for our visit to the national park tomorrow and hope our legs are fully recovered by then.

Our room by the Zurich airport was barely big enough to turn around in but it was bigger than the pods at the airport

greta combsYou and my son could have bypassed each other at the Zurich airport! Once every three months he goes to Switzerland to meet with colleagues from around the world. They hole up for a week and do their nerdy best on their computer engineering. This time, my son had no accomodations when he arrived in Zurich airport so I don't know if he slept in the airport or not. Thank goodness - my son can sleep anywhere!
