Day 3 - Near Pluherlin to near Questembert

Today was our longest day of the entire trip, and the rainiest day so far and for the foreseeable future. Sixty-eight miles of flat canal cycling may not be a lot for many people, but we're old and have excuses. Also, there are lots of things to see and birds to identify. But today, it rained all morning which perhaps was a good thing because it made Doug slightly less likely to pull over at every sound or sighting of a bird.

So, we made record time, hitting 35 miles by the time we stopped for a late lunch. We rode into Guenrouet hoping for a fast lunch. It was a small town with limited options. We rode past the boulangerie which looked very closed and I walked into a bar where I had my most successful conversation ever with someone that I believe spoke zero English. It went like this:

Vous avons un sandwich?

Non.

Le boulangerie est ferme?

En vacance.

It wasn't a long conversation, but it was efficient, even if I didn't get the answers I wanted. So, we went back to the canal, found some shelter from the rain and ate everything we bought yesterday at a grocery store.

Our lodging for the night was an old gatehouse converted into a hostel. Excellent. Though a hostel, we each had our own room with en-suite. Upstairs was a group of French cyclist and I got to say things like "Nous venons a Saint Mari et nous allon a Sëte". It was a very slow conversation, but they were impressed and motioned that they took their chapeau off to us.

Not a lot of pictures today because of rain, but it looked like this pretty much all day. Beautiful, but more pictures are redundant.
