Today was a 70 miler.  There was good news and bad news.

  • First, the good news,  the sky was overcast and moderate temperatures with wind at my back all day.
  • The bad news, and not that bad, was that the trails  I started out on were not rail/trails, which meant that they followed the rolling hills of the area.   They were, however paved an well maintained.

Following the trails were secondary roads, with some paved and some gravel.  It was OK since I started out early and had no urgency to get there.  There is Perry, IA at the Super 8.

When I did get on a trail, it was the Heart of Iowa trail and it was all mowed grass at first.  It was and old railroad bed and not used much and went for 4 miles.  It led me to Collins, where it started the newly paved with concrete trail of the same name.  The rest of the way was concrete.  All brand new.

.... a joy to ride.

At around noon, I stopped at Mom's in Maxwell and at lunch.  I was surprised to see a restaurant open on a Monday.  Apparently the Casey's convenience store had been burned by the local arsenist, so Mom's took up the slack by offering pizza and more.  I was grateful.

I met Chris and his wife, Mary, who were riding the trails.  They shared there adventures of riding the Ride Across South Dakota.  I took their picture, but.....

Later, I was riding on the High Trestle Trail, and there is a high Trestle where it crosses the Des Moines River.  ...long and high...  see pics whenever....

Kris and Shelley, well, Shelley to a picture of me and Old Sage Infront of the Trestle ends ....

Kris was going to have both lungs replaced, but I didn't get a chance to here the rest of that story.

Riding to Audubon, IA tomorrow.  About 60 miles with some back roads.

The trail I started out with today. Iowa River's Edge Trail, I think?

I left that nice trail and rode some gravel and paved roads and found the beginning of the Heart of Iowa Nature trail. Ugh! At least they mowed it.

It actually turned into this nice trail that paralleled the highway.
