Today we went back Italy for a few miles. We actually rode along the border for several miles. It was already 77 degrees when we left and showed a steady 89 by 10:30 then mid 90’s. Brody’s Garmin registered 101 on the tarmac. The wind was much appreciated.
The first 8 miles was wonderful though. We saw 2 cars and at least 50 cyclists. This could be due to being a Sunday? The Slovenian cyclists are not only fast but they all wave or say hi and are super nice. The scenery was vineyard after vineyard and reminiscent of Piedmont for us. This is the Italian Friuli area. It was also following the Giro and we had the luxury of fresh smooth soft pavement so imagine lovely vineyards with friendly cyclists on soft pavement and no cars and mainly downhill. Sigh. Heaven!
We then climbed up to the Karst plateau and passed several castles. We a large Femme team in full training (I admit none waived but their coaches were all Megaphoning them and right behind ). In Štanjel, we stopped for well needed cold gelato and rode around the medieval castle and the Ferrari gardens (which were not as impressive as those at Valsanzibio so didn’t pay the entry fee). We rushed into our hotel and back out and managed to get the last tour for the Škocjan Caves and really enjoyed the coolness and managed to walk and do 500 stairs! They are huge and very impressive. No photos allowed in the cave but we got some after walking around.
