Day 39 and we’ve made it to Illinois, our eighth and last state of the trip. As a bonus…it’s flat.

Making our way out of St Louis was a bit of an adventure, as parts of the river walk bike path were blocked, and we had a light rain.

Obviously the river is a big aspect of St Louis, from the flood barriers to the artwork.

We crossed the Mississippi River on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, about 10 miles north of St Louis. Completed in 1928, with a span more than a mile long, this bridge was part of RT 66 beginning in 1936. Now just open for pedestrians and bicycles.

Soulsby’s began operating in 1926 and the restored station is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
