The “Mississippians” refer to various Native American people who thrived in what is now the southeast and Midwest US from roughly 800 to 1600 CE. They were known for building large, earthen platform mounds.

The largest Mississippian city was Cahokia which, at its peak in 1050 CE, numbered around 20,000 residents plus another 30,000 or 40,000 in the outlying farming communities. It was North America’s first great city and was at that time larger than London.

It was fascinating learning about the construction and purpose of the mounds and the organization of the city. Present day St. Louis is visible from the top of Monks Mound.

Wynn WagenseilA glimpse of the layers of history. This site calls to mind "City of Dreams," a Widespread Panic song. From the Lucas playlist.

The ride to and from the Mounds was easier because of road closures related to the St. Louis marathon. This was in stark contrast to LA where we got caught up in mobs of runners and viewers of the LA marathon on Santa Monica blvd.

The day was capped off with a Cardinals game at Busch stadium in which Nolan Arenado walked off the Brewers with a home run in the bottom of the 9th. Back on the road tomorrow morning with Chicago in our sights.
