Sommieres: A photo gallery

Sommieres is a historically important and well preserved small town. Its historic core is a protected area, to prevent further development and preserve its medieval character. It is worth more time than we could spare today on our quick pass through. If we come back this way again some year, I would want to stay overnight and have a really good look.

Sommieres' bridge is ancient, dating back to the first century when it was part of the trade route between Toulouse and Nimes. The original bridge, which has been built over and renovated numerous times over the last two millennia, consisted of twenty arches. The others were eventually incorporated into the structure of the surrounding houses.
