Day 5 - Mostly Butchart Gardens

Picture Day

About last night…I mentioned in yesterday’s journal that we were going to go out later to hopefully catch a glimpse of the northern lights. Jim, Gen, and I went out about 11:00 and walked to the darkest area we could find along the waterfront. No northern lights — way too much light pollution, even if they had been present — but the lights around the shoreline were very pretty.

Looking away from Laurel Bay.

Our big goal is to see Butchart Gardens. Rich and I were last here in 2005 — 20 years ago! And, of course it does not disappoint. Please forgive the barrage of pictures; these are only a sample of the many photos taken today.

Gorgeous rhododendron everywhere, in every possible color. These caught my eye because of their speckled throats.

I believe this is ten-week stock, also known as gilly-flower.

It’s hard to believe the gardens ever looked like this.

Bog garden - if you look closely, you can see topiary heron and topiary deer in the distance.

One of the many statues in the gardens. This one is particularly poignant. And there appears to be a garden gnome peeking out of the bushes.

After Butchart gardens, we drive back to the hotel, wander up the street to a local pharmacy and enjoy a leisurely late-afternoon lunch in a garden restaurant. But we’re not done eating. Much later, we return to our local pub/restaurant to share  appetizers and once again order the waffle churros.

I know they just look like waffles, but they taste like a combination of churros, donuts, and pie ala mode.

Fully sated and needing to loosen our belts, we take a short walk. The sun has just set and the lights are coming on everywhere. It’s a perfect ending to a perfect stay in Victoria.

The parliamentary building is outlined in lights.
