Day 17 - Rest Day in Anacortes
Clean clothes, No Kings, and Not Much Else
Today is a rest day, and the highest priority is laundry. After an adequately satisfying hotel breakfast, Jim, Gen, and I drive down to the laundromat. Rich is still not feeling well, so he’s taking a true day of rest.
After laundry is folded and packed away, the three of us head downtown to wander around Anacortes. I have been following the news all morning, monitoring the No Kings protests going on all over the country. If I were home in Napa, I’d be participating in the protest. As I drive down Commercial Street, which is the main drag in Anacortes, I wonder aloud what kind of participation a small town like this will have.
I don’t have to wonder long. Starting at around 20th, the street is lined with protesters on both sides, all the way down to 5th Ave. It’s fantastic! I honk the horn all the way in support. Gen takes pictures out the window (and has thankfully, let me borrow a few of those for the blog).
We park and then begin walking back up toward the protest, stopping at an olive oil and balsamic vinegar store for tastings. I end up coming out with several small bottles of balsamic and a couple of larger bottles of herbed olive oil. (Another reason it’s nice to have a support vehicle when touring.)
I tuck into the local yarn shop to ooh and ahh at the lovely, squishy yarns, wishing I could buy everything in the shop, while Jim and Gen continue their ramble up the street.
We reconvene at The Islander Cafe, which has a surprisingly varied menu. Gen and I both have salads; Jim has breakfast again. Though the restaurant has signs boasting “Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner” and has a full dinner menu, it closes daily at 2:00 PM. I’m still trying to figure out how that works.
Back at the room, Rich has been napping and reading on his iPad and is mostly bored, but not feeling well enough to go out or to be in public with his cough and sore throat. While the rest of us were out, we had stopped at the pharmacy and I picked up two Covid tests and some cough drops. Fortunately, Rich tested negative.
I hung out in the room with him, knitting, until dinner which was takeout again—a Pizza Factory meal of lasagna and raviolis. Comfort food, which we ate in the hotel dining room. Jim and Gen walked down to the nearest Mexican restaurant for their meal.
Tomorrow, we ride to Port Townsend (and go on the last ferry ride of the trip). I’m looking forward to being back in the saddle.
I took almost no pictures today, but here are a few of the protest in Anacortes (courtesy, Genny Fox)…

And a couple of pictures of luscious hand-dyed yarn, for those who care…
Please see Genny’s blog for a much more exciting day than mine.
