A Good Day
Good friends, good food, and good conversation.
Today is just a day for hanging out and preparing for our first ride tomorrow. As is typical, Rich and I are the last ones out of bed this morning. After a cup of coffee, we take a walk down the hill to the water (sans Sandy who says he has seen the water before).
The water is smooth as glass and the tide is low, though not all the way down. Tiny crabs scuttle around the rocks and the clams spit water into the air like miniature fountains — a phenomenon I have not seen before. According to my Google search, spitting is part of their feeding process. They siphon in water and food from below, then filter out the food for digestion and spit out the excess water and particles. Fascinating.
We also spend a few minutes trying to decide what some of the plants are that surround one of the houses on the street just above the boat ramp before trudging back up the hill.
When we return, Sandy and Mary prepare a brunch feast of smoked salmon with a variety of cheeses, crackers, nuts, and fruits. We do a little organizing of our stuff for tomorrow, but have no real plans and spend the entire afternoon sitting and chatting about our lives, careers, families, and past touring adventures.
I’m knitting a cowl out of a soft merino wool, which I started just before we left home, and manage to accomplish at least 4 inches. At this rate, I’ll be done by end of day tomorrow. I’ve brought enough yarn for the cowl and a summer top of finger-weight cotton. (It’s nice having a to truck haul stuff.)
Dinner is at Maynard’s Restaurant in Silverdale. Sandy and Mary have not eaten there before and so we don’t know what to expect and are pleasantly surprised by a spacious restaurant with a varied American-style menu. I have the wedge salad, which comes with Gorgonzola cheese crumbles and dressing, bacon, apple slices, candied walnuts, and hard boiled egg. I added a blackened, grilled chicken breast for a fully satisfying meal. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their dinner, too, so I recommend giving them a try if you’re ever in Silverdale.
On the way back to the house, we take a drive to the top of the hill to enjoy the views of the water and Mt. Ranier in the distance. Back home, we toast our friendship with some sparkling wine, continuing our ongoing conversation before turning in for the night.
I didn’t take very many pictures today. Tomorrow, we ride a short 27 miles to Port Ludlow. We’re expecting showers in the morning so plan to leave mid-day in hopes of a drier ride. Fingers crossed.
