Alcatraz and Home

Weather = Sunny & warm

Lodging = Home

Today we visit Alcatraz Island.

We got up about 7 a.m. and went and had the complimentary breakfast of cereal, toast and all the coffee you could drink at the hostel cafe. We then packed our bags and put them in in storage at the hostel with our bikes. Today we are mainly walking. First stop was the Safeway to buy lunch supplies, once that was done we headed back through Fort Mason to Fisherman's Wharf.

Our first stop was the San Francisco Maritime Museum which showed the maritime history of the bay.

We then visited the National Park Maritime Visitors Center which was very interesting. By this time is was getting close to our ferry ride to Alcatraz so we didn't linger and headed to the piers.

Once on the island we had lunch down by the docking area. Because that was the only place you were allowed to.

We then walked up to the main cell block and took the audio tour.

About 2:30 p.m. we took the ferry back to the pier and then walked back to the hostel. Loading up the bikes we rode back down to Pier 41 and caught the 4:15 p.m. ferry to Oakland, catching some great views of Yorba Buena Lighthouse as we passed close by.

We then biked over to the Oakland Harbor Lighthouse, which is now a restaurant called Quinns.

Had a beer and then headed back to the train station thinking we would find something to eat around there. Alas the area is a desert island for food. Well for what we wanted anyway.

So we hopped on the train and just eat whatever was left in our bags. Trail mix, cookies, granola bars.
