“Whale Power”

Friday Harbor Rest Day; Dog Happy, an adequate burger, a whale of a good time

Today was a planned day off the bike to do laundry and see downtown. Except our hosts insisted on doing our laundry for us yesterday and somehow we were not that interested in the touristy trinket shops downtown. Instead we had breakfast then drove back to Roche Harbor with 3 objectives: to view the 20 acres sculpture garden just outside the harbor, to try out the burger at the Lime Kiln Cafe, reputed to be the “best burger on the island”, and to get a photo of a picture Jim had spotted inside the grocery when we were here two days ago.

The Sculpture Garden is special. The pics speak for themselves.

Reminds one of how the bum feels after a very long day

After the sculpture garden, we headed down to the harbor for lunch. As it turned out, Jim was the only one who had a burger. However, he was unimpressed and pronounced it as only “adequate”. But all of us agreed that the fries were truly exceptional.

And here is the picture, titled “Sonoma Sobriety Test #1”, featuring a winery that most Napa Eagle Cycling Club members have ridden through on the way to Lovell Valley:

Sorry for the glare, this was behind a computer screen that we had to pull forward to take the pic. It was a miracle that Jim spotted it.

After lunch we headed back to Friday Harbor to go on a whale and wildlife watching boat ride. Neither Jim nor I have ever been whale watching and we hoped to see some, although there is never a guaranteed sighting. Seeing Orcas would be extra special. The boat was pretty full, with several small children aboard with their families. We did see seals, sea lions, several species of waterfowl, a bald Eagle and the highlight was seeing a female humpback whale with her calf. The naturalists were even able to ID the female based on her tail markings. Everyone was very excited about this sighting, especially two young brothers, perhaps ages 3 and 5, who exclaimed “Whale Power, Whale Power” over and over again. I hope they remember this in the years to come.

(Sorry, no pics of the whales; we should get some from the company, taken with pro equipment, which I will add in later.)

We have eaten a lot of fine dining food this trip so tonight we had pizza and it was really good. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
