Washington Island, WI

4 miles to breakfast

Headed out on our bikes with Karen for coffee/tea and breakfast at the Red Cup. Amazing breakfast sandwiches and fine conversations with locals and long time island vacationers. We were there for a good couple of hours, discussing local issues, Toyotas and continued speculation on how we can get ferried from the island to the UP. Suggested options have included getting someone to fly us up there or going up to the boat harbor and trolling for someone with a large boat to take us. One guy at Gibson’s is considering it, but he’s not sure where to put to bikes on the boat. He thought maybe they could be lashed to the front deck or onto the back. We’re kinda thinking that either of those options would give us some very wet, beat up bikes. Stay tuned to see how it works out! 😄

Later on, we went to School House Beach and watched as kids and adults alike tossing and skipped the rocks into the lake. The water was breathtakingly cold, but refreshing. We stopped for lunch libations and fried Wisconsin cheese curds (um, amazing), then pretty much chilled out the rest of the afternoon. Later on, we watched the clouds move in across the lake at Gibson’s beach and got caught in a sudden deluge. We quickly grabbed our snacks and ducked into one of the cabins near the shore and chatted with the couple staying there. Karen and Peter of course know these folks (and anyone else who vacations here on a regular basis 😃). They have a cool Hardy Boys style boat and Peter said that when they’re out on the lake they look like a flashback to the Kennedy era. We had a great time waiting out the storm on their porch, then made our way back up to the house to assemble dinner. Back down to the shoreline for more chill time and sunset viewing. Jon actually fell asleep on the rocks, using his flip flop as a headrest. The remaining clouds made for an amazing sunset show. Definitely a good rest day.
