Faith, SD

Set off early from camp after a fairly decent night’s sleep. No craziness overnight in the area. It was as kinda chilly this morning, in the low 50’s, so we had a couple extra layers on until we warmed up a few miles later. Lots of rolling ups and downs with a bit of tail/side wind. Not a bad biking day at all. We averaged 15.4 mph for the day. There were only 2 towns we passed through today, both in the first 25 miles, so we had to water up at the last one, Newell. We took a good break there for second breakfast. While we were waiting to fill our water bottles at the soda fountain, there was a sweet 20 something guy trying to figure out what size the cups were  and asking the clerk how much each one cost. Then he asked how much more it was for the drink in the cup. He settled on the one that was $1.37 with tax; as he was filling his cup, I went up to the cashier and paid for his drink. He was quite surprised and had a big smile on his face. ❤️

The terrain didn’t change much at all today, but it was pretty nonetheless. Lots of grasslands, cows, deer, antelope, horses and the occasional cattle rustler. At one of our snack breaks, a couple of horses were checking us out, but wouldn’t come near the fence until we left. Then they raced us down the road. Really fun.

At 4:00, we rolled into Faith , SD (cause ya gotta have Faith...🎶). Faith is where the discovered Sue, the TRex that’s in Chicago Field Museum. We stopped in the center of “town” (a one traffic light town, we’ll blinking light) and checked out dinner options. We went into the 2R Bar and Grill and each had a brew and chatted with the owner/bar tender and her son. After a little while Calvin came in. Calvin was a 70 something town fixture and self proclaimed town drunk. He ordered a Busch lite and Jon paid for it. In compensation he shared a few stories with us. He offered to repay us, but we had to go check into our room and get cleaned up. We found the Prairie Vista Inn, walked in the door and were immediately hit with the strong odor of cigarette smoke. Swell. Thankfully, the room did not smell at all, otherwise we’d have had to figure something else out. After a nice long shower, we walked back over to the 2R and ordered a couple of steaks for dinner. Of course Calvin was still there, so we got more stories of old cars and racing on old roads, living in Sturgis and celebrating divorce. I didn’t mention we were on this trip to celebrate our 25th anniversary 😄

We got back to the hotel around 7. Jon was ready to crash and I wanted to work on the journal. I typed about 4 sentences and my eyelids got very heavy. Crash. 😴

Today's ride: 99 miles (159 km)
Total: 2,380 miles (3,830 km)
