Sabaudia to Anzio

So what a lazy morning we had! Woke at 8:00 and had breakfast at 9:00. And then we lingered a bit, not pushing off till after 11:00 AM. How did that happen? Well, we were only going as far as Anzio, less than 30 miles. And check-in was around 2:00 or 3:00, so we were in no rush!

Today's ride to Anzio

Eventually, we mounted up and rode out of town, across the bridge and lake we had entered on, and turned right onto the same "beach" road we had arrived on.

On our right, as we headed north, were a series of inland lakes and conservation areas.

And on our left, the ocean and beach.

Following this road, we eventually reached the end of the conservation area and turned inland along this very pretty access road. It was, now and then, surrounded by this tall, bushy vegetation that was either sugarcane or bamboo and seemed to grow everywhere. We also started seeing more horses.

This picture is from an earlier day but shows the type of vegetation we are seeing plenty of. Looks to be almost like a weed, as it grows everywhere, particularly near water.

This road led us to a somewhat busier road, but after a very brief ride on it, we actually returned to the coast and made our way to Foce Verde, passing more beautiful scenery and taking our time.

One of the many canals we crossed.

Foce Verde treats their cyclists right!

Foce Verde is pretty much a beach town. And a pretty one too. As we neared the town edge, we decided to stop and have lunch, not knowing when the next opportunity would present itself. We picked a restaurant that looked unassuming from the outside but was very pleasant on the inside with a nice terrace overlooking the ocean. We were also clearly in seafood territory now, so we indulged ourselves!

Mark, ready for lunch!

A plate full of clams. I like these small ones, and you find them everywhere here.

And the main course, Spaghetti allo Scoglio, except it wasn't spaghetti but another type of pasta starting with a T . . . later determined to be tagliolini. Hard to get that in the States, I bet!

It was not a long stretch after lunch to make it to Anzio, a very cute town with a reputation for good seafood.

And the port.

Our B&B was right off the center of town and maybe two blocks from the port. A very festive town center with plenty of restaurant choices and live music.

We allowed ourselves a beer before dinner tonight and then picked a nice seafood restaurant for dinner. All very good. I had tuna steak. Tomorrow we head for Rome.

Today's ride: 29 miles (47 km)
Total: 501 miles (806 km)
